Granular Flow (2021-2022)
The purpose of our experiment is to aid the separation of grains within the lunar regolith, which is composed of rock chips, mineral fragments, impact and volcanic glass, and agglutinates. The majority of these grains are between 45-100 micrometers, making it practically impossible to separate the grains by hand. That job is made easy with the use of our prototype. To prove this separation is possible in zero gravity, this experiment will test the separation of two obloids of different diameters. It uses the vibration of a motor attached to a cylinder containing the obloids. The goal of this experiment is to see if they will agglomerate by diameter. A clear cylinder will hold a mix of two different obloids of different diameters. In its current form, the cylinder containing the mix will be suspended to the chassis by springs. A vibrating motor will oscillate the cylinder. Three cameras attached to the interior box will observe and record the experimental results. An Arduino mini controller will both power and operate the motor and cameras.
Hawaii Space Flight Laboratory
The team had the opportunity to visit the Hawaii Space Flight Laboratory at UH Manoa on Oahu. There the experiment was modified and tested on a vibrating table.
